Hungry Caterpillar

Behind the scenes

The woolly bear caterpillar spends the winter months frozen solid, defrosts in spring and is re-frozen in winter. Caterpillars normally become moths within months of hatching, but for the woolly bear caterpillar, it takes 14 years to reach adulthood. Once it becomes a moth, it has only a few days to find a mate before it dies.
