Episode 3 – The Kula Ring

Preview

Will's final destination is the Trobriand Islands, a group of tiny atolls found 150 miles off the east coast of Papua New Guinea. These islands are part of a complex trading network called The Kula Ring, which connects the Trobriands to many other islands in the region.

Kula is an ancient practice that sees men set off in canoes, travelling across the open ocean to exchange highly-prized shell armbands with partners on neighbouring islands. For centuries it has provided a connection between remote village communities, opening the way for further trade that has been vital to their survival.
